Fashion First with the Little Silver Woman’s Club

By Lori Draz

Each year, at the McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Base, attendance at three annual military balls is a required activity by the young families of service people. Shopping and spending lots of dollars on wear-one-time formalwear is just not possible for all, so the Little Silver Woman’s Club (LSWC) has designed a fashion-forward solution. They collect gowns, evening shoes, bags and costume jewelry which allows the military women to operate the Cinderella’s Closet Building on the McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Base.

Here’s how it works. Ladies “shop” from the donated inventory and then rent a dress for a $20 refundable deposit. The deposit is refunded when the dress is returned with a dry cleaning tag, making it ready for the next customer. It is essentially a free service to military families.

Club President Kathy Doty reports that the LSWC has already collected more than 130 gowns, handbags, shoes and jewelry items, without even promoting it. “It’s clear that people feel such respect for the fact that the military help us every day. Why not help them? We have so many people out there with formalwear they may not want, and we welcome each new donation.”

If you would like to schedule a pickup for your donation call Doty at 732-320-6652.
