Family Members Did Not Know How to Swim in East Brunswick Pool Tragedy

Three family members who did not know how to swim tragically drowned Monday afternoon at their newly purchased East Brunswick home.

According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, it has been determined that 33-year-old Nisha Patel, her 62-year-old father-in-law Bharat Patel and her 8-year-old daughter did not know how to swim when they entered the pool at approximately 4 pm Monday.

After hearing screams coming from the backyard at 43 Clearview Rd., a neighbor called to police.

โ€œWe believe the mother was screaming from inside the pool for help,โ€ police spokesman Frank Sutter said at a press conference.

Once officers arrived on scene in East Brunswick and pulled the bodies from the pool, CPR was performed, but all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Public records show the house was purchased on May 1 and included a mostly shallow pool that had a deeper 7-foot section and was recently opened by a pool company, according to a neighbors.

Authorities initially began investigating a possible electrocution, but that theory was ruled out Tuesday afternoon.
