An endangered North Atlantic Right Whale was spotted off the coast of Sea Bright Beach. Federal authorities said the whale was entangled and in extremely poor condition, as first reported by nj.com.

According to NOAA Fisheries, the whale spotted in Sea Bright is one of 400 of its species estimated to be alive today.

The whale was first spotted on Oct. 11, when members of the New York-based whale watching cruise, The American Princess, spotted the whale entangled in fishing lines.

Photos of the whale were taken, and after further examination, it appeared that there were large lesions on its body.

Paul Sieswerda, Gotham Whale’s executive director stated, β€œIt looked very emaciated, and had been impacted by entanglement.”

North Atlantic Right Whales are commonly struck by boat propellers, which is how one whale met its fate in late June off the Long Branch coast.

The whale has not been spotted since Sunday, and the New England Aquarium is working to identify it.
