The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a single-vehicle crash in Matawan that left one dead. The Asbury Park Press first reported, at approximately noon yesterday, an off-duty police officer from Roselle appeared to have lost control of his car on Broad Street in Matawan, causing the vehicle to crash into parked cars and subsequently roll over.

According to Christopher Swendeman, a spokesman for the MCPO,Β  39-year-old Aberdeen resident Edward Nortrup, a Roselle Park cop died from a self-inflicted gunshot to his head. As emergency crews responded to the crash and worked to extract the off-duty police officer from his vehicle, he took his own life with a firearm.

Nortrup, a 1999 Raritan High School graduate and 2007 graduate of the John H. Stamler Police Academy, served in the detective bureau and was a member of the Union County Emergency Response Team.

This is an ongoing investigation, and no further information is available at this time.
