DETOUR ALERT: Train Bridge Struck on Laurel Avenue

The Middletown Police Department announced that the train bridge on Laurel Avenue was struck this afternoon, resulting in a continuing detour affecting Kings Highway, Route 35 and Red Hill Road.
Laurel Avenue connects the Garden State Parkway and Route 35.
Drivers are advised to plan for an alternate route.
The 12’5″ bridge is often the site of truck accidents. Traffic jams are also common in the area as some drivers turn around, avoiding collision but temporarily blocking lanes.
It was recently announced that new, upgraded signs for the low-overhead NJ Transit overpass are being installed. The new signage will replace what is already posted but in a more visible manner, up to and including signage with flashing beacons over the roadway on each approach.
Over the past five years, the Holmdel Police Department has responded to 21 crashes and 96 calls from truckers who need police assistance in turning around.
