The Monmouth Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced the winners of its 2018 essay contest. Each year DAR conducts an essay contest with local public, private, parochial schools and registered home study programs inviting students in grades five through eight to participate. This year, nine schools participated with a total of 606 essay entries. The topic was “World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars.”
On April 23, The Shrewsbury Towne-Monmouth Chapter held its award night at Shrewsbury Borough Hall and handed out winning certificates along with certificates of participation from the local chapter.
Winners included:
Grade 6 -1st place, Peter Noble, St. Leo the Great
Grade 7- 1st place, Thomas Villapiano, St. Leo the Great
Grade 8- 1st place, Seton Smith-, St. Leo the Great
In addition, Thomas Villapiano won 1st place for 7th grade on both the State level and the Eastern Division of the U.S. Seton Smith won 1st place for 8th grade on the State level.
The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a nonprofit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. The Shrewsbury Towne-Monmouth Chapter has been participating in the national essay contest for over 25 years.
