At 8:33 am on Monday, Oct. 17, the Middletown Township Fire Department (MTFD) was dispatched to a kitchen fire at the Alice V. Tomaso Towers Apartment complex located at 2 Oakdale Dr. in the Old Village section of Middletown Township. The fire was reported by the resident.
The first arriving unit, Middletown’s Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) had a crew member who is also a MTFD lieutenant. He confirmed the apartment fire and requested the standard box alarm backup units be dispatched. The first arriving engine was instructed to deploy a 1 3⁄4” hand line to the first-floor apartment, attacking the fire MTFD Deputy Chief John Waltz assigned other units to ventilate, secure the other floors and adjoining units of this senior citizen living facility. Simultaneous to the fire suppression efforts, thermal imaging cameras were employed to ensure all fire was found and extinguished.
The apartment’s utilities were secured by the building’s maintenance manager.
The fire was placed under control by Deputy Chief Waltz at 8:50 am. All units were cleared from the scene by noon.
Approximately 30 firefighters from five companies of the Middletown Township Fire Department responded to the call from Belford Engine, Community, Belford Independent, Middletown Fire Company No.1 and Old Village Fire companies. Additionally, the MTFD Air Unit, Fire Police and the Safety Unit also responded.
MEMS provided medical services. No firefighter injuries were reported.
All units operated safely under the supervision of Middletown Township Fire Department Deputy Chief John Waltz.
The fire is being investigated by the Middletown Township Fire Marshal’s office under the direction of Fire Marshal Edward Skelly.
