The Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank recently unveiled the new name for its main performing space, and it’s not hard to miss. The new sign reads “Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre” on top of the Basie’s marquee.

“This is the ascension of the Basie,” said Adam Philipson, CEO of the Count Basie Center. “This is recognition that what is happening here is right, the expansion is right, and the need here in this community is prevalent.”

Work continues as The Basie proceeds on its $26 million capital campaign to transform itself into and arts, education and entertainment campus.

“Music and health care have a real link,” said Robert Garrett, co-CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health, during his remarks at a naming ceremony on Oct. 26. “A lot of studies indicate how music can really reduce anxiety for patients and their families, and lesson pain.”

Construction is underway on the west end of the building, which will house the Jay and Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building, as well as the Basie’s as-yet-unnamed second performance space.

Other improvements include an expanded lobby, new concessions and restroom facilities, a new Basie member’s lounge, the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion and a spacious outdoor plaza.
