The Fair Haven-based, student-run nonprofit Companeros de Comida delivered its final meal on May 14. Founded by former Teen Scene author Charlotte Stant, a Rumson-Fair Haven grad and currently a Trustee Scholar at Boston University, the organization was created in the height of the pandemic to deliver meals to marginalized, Spanish-speaking families in neighboring Red Bank.

Tinton Falls Councilwoman Risa Clay, who served as a board member for Companeros said, “The commitment of these teens to serve the needs of local families is nothing short of amazing, and the financial support provided by the people of Monmouth County to run the organization was inspiring.”

Stant said of closing the nonprofit, “I am proud of what we accomplished the last 24 months.  We helped over 150 families that included over 230 children who were able to achieve food security as a direct result of our intervention. We proved that emergency crisis intervention that addresses food insecurity is effective and necessary to stabilize marginalized communities. We also showed that a group of teens that work together with a shared mission can achieve incredible results!”

Ali Gagliardi and Jenny Portela, who took over operational duties when Stant went to university, provided the final statistics to the board at the volunteer luncheon held at Tavola Pronto in Fair Haven: 213,460 meals served and $92,000 raised between May 2020 and May 2022.

Congratulations to all the dedicated volunteers and donors who made this possible.
