Colts Neck Girls’ Lacrosse Can Establish a Winning Trend

By Les Pierce

Paige Smurro

In 2022, the Colts Neck girls’ lacrosse team posted a 9-8 record. The achievement was somewhat of a breakthrough as the program had not experienced a winning season since they went 18-3 in 2018.

The good news here is the entire 2022 squad will be returning and improved with a year of maturity. Buoyed by recent success, the Cougars could embark on a winning track.

Returning key players are Paige Smurro (Jr. M), Hannah Perlman (So. M), Morgan Spenceley (Sr. M), Alex Foley (Sr. A/M), Brynn Mahoney (So. A), Kaitlyn Kobetitsch (Sr. D) and Alex Blaszczck (Sr. G).

Smurro led the unit in scoring last season with 52 goals. However, her amazing 108 draw controls point to her ability to control possession. She also accounted for 61 ground balls and 37 forced turnovers.

Playing as a freshman in 2022, Perlman made an immediate impact, causing 50 forced turnovers. Her stats include 33 goals, 46 ground balls and 37 draw controls.

Spenceley scored 16 goals and picked up 38 ground balls. She also influenced game pace with 31 draw controls and 17 forced turnovers.

Foley’s stats include 20 goals and 25 ground balls. Mahoney found the net 19 times and collected 25 ground balls.

The defense was driven by Kobetitsch. The senior defender created 26 forced turnovers and garnered 22 ground balls.

Veteran goalkeeper Blaszczck will be entering her third season covering the net. She stopped 77 shots last year and is approached the 200 milestone with 187 career saves.

Last year Smurro, Perlman and Kobetitsch were named to the Shore Coaches A-North All Division First Team. Foley was selected to the Shore Coaches A-North All Division Second Team

The Cougars will host the Marlboro Mustangs on Tuesday, April 4 to launch the 2023 season.
