Clean Ocean Action Celebrates World Oceans Day 2020

June 8 was World Oceans Day. In light of the current conditions, Clean Ocean Action (COA) commemorated this day of celebration and education virtually.

The day of informative videos from local marine experts and educators began at the crack of dawn as COA captured a beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout the day, advocates, enthusiasts and scientists took to social media to share lessons on marine life.

Some of the highlights of the day included a visit from local naturalist Kathleen Gasienica, who took viewers along on a virtual beachcombing tour of Sandy Hook. Some of the finds of the walk included jingle shells and moon snails.

To celebrate the great recreation that clean oceans offer, Bryan Zinski, owner of Summa Love Surf and Yoga, Surf Camp and Summa Love Art Studio, presented his video “Surfing: Connecting with the Waves.” Zinski invited viewers to dive in with him.

At noon, COA paused for a peaceful “Mid-Day Mindfulness Break” which featured the rolling waves as watchers reflected on the ocean’s majesty. As evening settled in, another local naturalist and conservation director at Shark Research Institute, Dave Grant, gave the audience a real education on the ancient horseshoe crab in his video “A Living Fossil: All About Horseshoe Crabs.”

World Oceans Day 2020 helped show that the shore has something for everyone and just how essential it is to love and care for this greatest resource. Videos from this year’s World Oceans Day can be viewed on COA’s social media pages or at
