Catholics Urged to Unite in ‘A Light in the Darkness’

By Lori Draz

This Saturday is Holy Saturday, the most sacred evening of the Paschal season as Catholics and Christians wait for Jesus’ glorious resurrection, yet this year, churches will remain empty.

Catholics throughout the Diocese of Trenton are encouraged to display a lighted candle in the window of their homes, around sunset 7:32 pm on Holy Saturday evening, as a symbol of our unity with Catholics throughout the world while Paschal Candles are being lit at Easter Vigils. These lighted candles are the symbol of the Diocese of Trenton “A Light in the Darkness,” the darkness that has been the COVID -19 pandemic. Electric candles like the type used at Christmas are acceptable. The Diocese offers the following prayer from the Easter Vigil to be said as candles are lighted: “May the light of Christ rising in glory dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.”
