After a year’s absence, St. George’s-by-the-River’s once again welcomed eager crowds of art lovers to the Canterbury Art Show which returned, as always, on Labor Day weekend. Nearly 75 artists shared their works of oils, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, watercolor, mixed-media and photography in the juried and non-juried parts of the show. The four-day event also included a Meet the Artists reception for artists to meet and greet patrons on Sept. 3.

The Canterbury Art Show featured dimensional art including glass, stone, pottery, textiles, fine jewelry, ceramic, wood, metal and mixed media.
The committee was pleased to welcome back the “Art from Artists” drawing and “Artists at Work.” There were also tours of St. George’s Church and the grounds.
This year’s winners of Best in Show award went to Cheryl Griesbach for her oil painting “In the Beginning.” The Award of Excellence was presented to Randy Mayer for her drawing “Whiskered and Wooly.”
Honorable mentions included: Denise Mumm for “Moroccan Garden” in acrylic/collage; Marino Cirillo for “The Calling” in drawing; Regina Guarino for “Wildflowers” in oil; Ed Hicks for “Miss Chandar” in pastel; Joan Myers for “Asbury Wave” in photography; and MaryLou Shipman for “Willie” in watercolor.
Proceeds from the Canterbury Art show are designated for St. George’s and the many outreach activities at more than 30 local agencies including Family Promise, HABcore and Covenant House.
The St. George’s community thanks all the volunteers including Coni Lefferts, Beth Sherrard, Maggie Raynor, Terry Blake, Jill Broderick, Lisa Gilmour, Paula Jordan, Pat Locke, Taylor McFarland, Carole Rogers, Mary Jane Suruda, Prue Turnamian, Leslie Tuthill, Kim Warman, Kathy Welch and Dianne Zeigler.
