Business Matters: A New Year Upon Us

Glen J. Dalakian, Sr.

Happy New Year! Or is it? Many are wondering, “Where did the months go?” and “How did 2017 slip away so quickly?” Well, ready or not, January 2018 is upon us and we can either let it happen or make it happen. One of my mentors often said there are three types of people: 1) Those who watch things happen, 2) Those who make things happen, and 3) Those who say, “What just happened?” This article is for the one out of three that, regardless of where you were before reading this, are looking to be the one who “makes it happen” in 2018. So what does that look like for you?

A few steps that could allow you to have your best year yet are not that hard to follow. You can’t steer a parked car, so let’s start by taking action. First, let’s review the year gone by for the sole purpose of assessing our mistakes and learning from them for the future. Don’t get caught up in the “woulda, shoulda, coulda” – just take a quick look, learn, and move on. Second, review your success. Gain strength and build foundations with the things you did right. Spend more time here than on step one, as this will encourage, build up, and give you insights to make more right choices in the days ahead.

Third, what do you want to accomplish in the next year? Goal setting is touted by most mentors or leadership trainers, but how many of us actually take the time to think through and actually write down our goals? Not just a haphazard “I want to be rich,” but thought-out, experience-driven, path-finding goals that will bring you closer every day to the desired end result. Real written goals will impact you more than you know.

Fourth and most important is to take action! “Talk is cheap” and there is a lot of it going around. But true winners get going.  They get up again and again even when they are exhausted. They read, spend time with other winners, and chase wisdom to gain the confidence and direction they need. They lead by example and help people around them get what they want, which in turn helps them achieve their own desires. But most important is to keep moving forward, as action is what gets things done.

So will 2018 be your best year yet? Frankly, and for the most part, it’s in your hands. Yes, challenges will arise (that’s called life and it happens to all of us), but how you handle your circumstances is what matters most. Stay focused, be positive, and encourage everyone around you to do the same. This will help you build and maintain the momentum required to succeed in this new year and for years to come.

“Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.” ~ Thomas Jefferson
