Brookdale Freshman Wins NASTAR Gold for Third Year

Marco Sullivan, four-time Olympian and World Cup Champion, at the finish line with Alex Perkins

Alex Perkins, a freshman at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, has once again captured gold at the 2017 NASTAR Eastern Regional Championship held at Okemo Mountain, Vermont on January 27 and 28. Alex, a 19-year-old Fair Haven resident, had the fastest finish among his age category of 18- to 20-year-old male skiers in that Saturday’s championship race, which featured Olympian and World Cup Champion skier Marco Sullivan as pacesetter. Alex’s finish also gave him the fastest raw time of 20.94 for all skiers under the age of 21 who competed in the event. This is the third consecutive first place finish for Alex, who also took gold at the 2015 and 2016 events. This win qualifies him for the 2017 NASTAR National Championship.

This is the eighth time in nine years that Alex has qualified for the National Championship race, which will be held this year in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on March 23-26. Last year, he placed second at the National Championship. He currently has a NASTAR ranking of 1 for all racers in New Jersey, and NASTAR ranks him 8 nationally in his age category.

Alex is the son of Debbie and Bill Perkins of Fair Haven. He is currently majoring in Homeland Security and Emergency Management at Brookdale Community College.
