Brick Woman Captured in Texas After Murdering Her Wife

Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus

Brick resident Marya Gavilanez-Alectus was charged with murdering her wife, Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus, also of Brick. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Brick Township Police Department Detective Bureau and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office found the murder weapon to be a cylindrical container intended for chilling wine, which aligned with Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus injuries.

On May 17, Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus, 32, was found lifeless in her home by officers. On May 18, the Ocean County Medical Examiner performed an autopsy of Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus’ body and determined the cause of death was a homicide. Marya Gavilanez-Alectus was also charged on May 18.

Marya Gavilanez-Alectus fled to Texas, but was ultimately tracked down on May 20 in Houston. She was apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Marshal Service, and the Houston Police Department. She was held in the Harris County Jail pending extradition to Ocean County. “It is our understanding that Gavilanez-Alectus traveled to Houston, from New York City by bus,” Prosecutor Billhimer stated in the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office press release.

“It is extremely satisfying when law enforcement works together and we are able to get a dangerous person like Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus into custody. We will immediately begin extradition proceedings to bring Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus back to Ocean County to answer for these charges. Justice for Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus weighs heavy on all of our minds,” the Prosecutor stated.
