Brick Township Woman Struck and Killed on Route 70

On Monday, April 6 around 7 pm, a pedestrian was killed while crossing Route 70 at Olden Street in Brick Township, police said.

The pedestrian, Kathleen M. Winits, 55, had crossed the highway against the pedestrian crossing signal, near the Brick Motor Inn Motel, and police said she was not in the crosswalk.

A white Mercedes C30, driven by 43-year-old Jennifer L. Squires, was traveling eastbound in the left lane of Route 70, approaching the intersection with a green light. Squires struck Winits, then came to a controlled stop.

Winits was determined deceased at the scene.

Witnesses at the scene reported that she ran out into traffic.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Traffic Safety Officer David Thergesen at the 732-451-2037.

The Brick Township Police Traffic Safety Unit, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit and the NJ Department of Transportation responded to assist with the investigation and traffic.
