Nut Swamp Elementary in Middletown was delighted to welcome Sarah Weeks, bestselling author of more than 50 children’s books, winner of the Rebecca Caudill Young Reader’s Book Award and the William Allen White Children’s Book Award. Ms. Weeks is best known for her novel So B It, which is now a major motion picture.

On January 19, Ms. Weeks gave three separate presentations to 580 students targeted to their age group. The presentations included an informative slideshow, the movie trailer for her book So B It which was just released on Amazon video, and a brief history of her background and writing career highlights. Ms. Weeks also did a book signing, shared cookies with a group of essay contest winners, and was able to enjoy the spectacular door decorations created by the students.

“Anytime we can have a professional writer visit with the students and pass on their insight into the writing process and share some of their creativity, it is a great thing for the kids,” said Nut Swamp Principal Neil Leone.

Ms. Weeks remarked, “One of the things that made my visit to Nut Swamp especially memorable was the incredible artwork created by students and teachers. I was also very impressed with the attentiveness of the students, and the enthusiasm of the staff- including your principal. When a whole school community works together to make an author feel welcome, it enhances the experience for everyone – including the visiting author.”

In addition to writing, Ms. Weeks has been an adjunct faculty member in the prestigious Writing Program at the New School University in New York City for the past ten years. She is a founding member of ART, a traveling troupe of authors who perform reader’s theatre at conventions and conferences across the country.
