August at the Oceanic Free Library

By Lori Draz

The Oceanic Free Library (OFL) has been having a busy summer, and now they are welcoming back all students for another season of learning. Stop by today for a cool break in these busy times at this friendly library, voted “Most Loved Library 2022” by Hulafrog for the fourth year in a row.

Congratulations to all who completed their Summer Reading List and the Ocean of Possibilities Reading Club! Enjoy all those nifty prizes you earned.

It’s a bittersweet moment for the staff and the patrons of OFL. After nearly 23 years, Nanette Reis will be retiring in late August. Be sure to stop by and wish her well as she takes off for new chapter in her life! They are excited to announce that Wendy Cettina will be taking her place as director. Cettina has been a staff member for six months, is a member of the knitting club, an avid reader and library patron.

The library also welcomes Molly Noctor as the new children’s librarian.

The adult Friday Knitters Group continues to meet every week from 2 pm. All levels of knitters and crocheters are welcome.

The Women’s Book Club meets on the third Thursday of each month at 1:30 pm. All are welcome, even gentlemen. Call the library if you need a large print or CD/audio version instead of the traditional print copy. Registration is not necessary.

The new Men’s Book Club is also setting up their future meeting times and titles. Their first title is “Tender at the Bar” by J.R. Moehringer. Visit the library website of call OFL for latest updates.

The Two River Bridge Club meets the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm for a lesson and promptly at 6:45 pm game play.

Miss Molly has more of those at home fun, “take and make” craft kits, available at the front desk on the first and fifteenth of every month. Each personally assembled kits bag contains all the pieces you’ll need to make a fun craft at home and a link for Virtual Story time and instructions. First come, first served—one bag per child.

Miss Molly invites you to Baby and Toddler Storytime, on Tuesdays 10:15 to 10:35 am or 11:15 to 11:35 am. Preschool and Family Storytime is held 2 to 2:30 pm on Tuesdays. Registration is mandatory for every StoryTime session. Drop-ins will not be admitted as session size is limited to 10 children per session. Masks are recommended but not mandatory for children. All unvaccinated accompanying adults must wear masks.

Each Tuesday from 3:45 to 4:30 pm, the library hosts some super fun In-House Children’s Programs. On Aug. 16 from 3:15 to 4 pm, it’s the “Eyes of the Wild!” a fun-filled animal show presented by Wallaby Tales. On Aug. 23 from 3:45 to 4:30 pm, with a second show from 4:45 to 5:30 pm, it’s “A Splash of Magic!” Enjoy a wet, wild, magical reading adventure with family entertainer Conrad Cologne! Register for only one event time. On Aug. 30 from 3 to 3:45 pm, there will be a Snapology LEGO Workshop for ages 6 and up, with parent or caregiver. Let your imagination go in this STEM-based program and create your own LEGO masterpiece!

As always, each month also features the works of local artists who display and make available for sale a vast array of art. There’s always some new and unique, and 20 percent of sales goes directly to support the library. This month, give your kitchen a lift with custom engraving as well as handmade bamboo cutting boards and utensils from Regina Funaro of ShoreCUTERIE Designs. Also featured are the beautiful oil paintings on canvas by artist Daniel Natale. In September, shop for the custom pet portraits by Jill White. Joining Jill will be Julia Muench and her lovely original textile art works.

The library’s Summer Saturday hours now through the weekend after Labor Day are 9 am to noon. Regular hours remain: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and Thursday from 10 am to 7 pm. They will be closed Saturday, Sept. 3 and Monday, Sept. 5 for Labor Day.
