Asbury Park Police Arrest Three Residents with Handguns

While on bike patrol in the area of the 10 block of Atkins Avenue, Asbury Park police officers Vincent Gargiulo and Kevin Gutierrez observed a male subject wielding a knife outside the Atkins Deli. The subject, later identified as 19-year-old resident Jakim Collins, was presenting the knife while arguing with another male located inside the deli.

Upon officers taking Collins into custody on Sept. 2 around 11 am, the male from within the store emerged and identified himself as Collins’ brother. This male, later identified as 22-year-old resident Janeek Barone, attempted to remove a shoulder bag from Collins’ shoulder while explaining to the officer that there was no issue. As Officer Gargiulo secured the bag and advised Barone not to obstruct, police observed a handgun inside the bag.

The handgun was a Davis Model P-32 caliber loaded with four rounds.

During this investigation, Officer Gargiulo was advised that Barone, while entering the deli, was observed to also be in possession of a similar-style shoulder bag. This shoulder bag was located inside the deli by Officer Stephen Love. A second handgun, Glock 21 45 caliber loaded with 11 rounds, was located within it.

Both Collins and Barone were arrested and transported to the Asbury Park Police Headquarters for processing.

Collins was charged with two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. Search incident to his arrest, he was also found to be in possession of and charged with a Controlled Dangerous Substance – CDS Crack Cocaine.

Due to numerous citizen complaints of both narcotics use/distribution and weapons offenses, Officer William Lewis was conducting surveillance in the area of Springwood and Borden Avenues later that day, just before 2 pm. As a result of an investigation, Officers Lewis and Love arrested 20-year-old city resident Darshan Simmons for possession of a handgun. Simmons had a Smith and Wesson 38 caliber loaded with four rounds.

Darshan Simmons was arrested and transported to the Asbury Park Police Headquarters for processing. He was charged with Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. He was also found to be in possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance CDS Paraphernalia.
