An Intentional Life

By Glen J. Dalakian Sr.

How many people go through life with a plan?  Most seem to wander around allowing the ebbs and flows of the days to take them wherever. Although there are times to get on the “Lazy River” and go along for the ride, in business this is not a strategy that will end well. But one thing is for sure, if you don’t know where you are going, you will certainly end up there.

The most successful people have vision, drive, motivation and sometimes more. Most of us have heard this over and over. But what holds us back?  Recently these familiar terms pop-up; “Fear of Failure,” “Fear of Ridicule,” and the strangest one to me (but it does exist) “Fear of Success.” As I have written before, the best acronym of FEAR is – False Evidence Appearing Real.    Hopefully an eye-opening statement if you really think about it.

So how does a person (at any age or point in their career) break out? How do we go beyond average and “succeed” at what interests or excites us?  Here are a few questions to ponder:

If you could have the perfect career, what would it look like?

What are the obstacles holding you back?

What are your strengths/skills that you can build upon?

What do you need (education, info, contacts, etc.) to move forward?

Who do is successful in your eyes and how can you spend some time with them?

When do you want to achieve your idea of success?

Once you start thinking about these questions, write the answers down. Study them and formulate ideas and solutions. Create a clear vision of where you want to be and make a timeline for your anticipated progress. Seek out those who might encourage and help you. Get away from negative people in your life (or at least stop listening to them).Clear a path to create forward momentum.

Most important, get started!  So many get ready “to get ready” to get started, but never actually engage. Begin with the end in mind. Focus on what is ahead and go. Step by step, keep running. Getting knocked down will not stop you, it’s the choice to get back up that makes the difference. Keep moving ahead with your end result in mind.  Keep your eyes on the prize not the price.

So have you heard this all before? Maybe not in such a concise article, but none-the-less it’s all true and it works. I have seen it time and again in my life and in others. But what makes the difference? Yes, sometimes it is timing (you may just not be ready) or perhaps it’s the circumstances?  Whatever the hold-up, you (and only you) must have the resolve that now is the time to make the   needed changes.

The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.”
