A group of Monmouth County mayors, dignitaries, family and friends came together at the roof top lounge at Teak in Red Bank to honor local mayors John Ekdahl and Donald Burden for their many years of service to Rumson and Shrewsbury.

Both men have been fixtures in their respective towns. Mayor Ekdahl retired earlier this year, handing over the reins to current mayor Joe Hemphill. Shrewsbury’s Don Burden announced earlier that he will not seek re-election once his current term concludes later this year.

The event was organized by Monmouth Beach Mayor Sue Howard and Fair Haven Mayor Benjamin Lucarelli. Lucarelli has worked closely with both men, and with Ekdahl in particular, as Fair Haven and Rumson have expanded numerous shared services in recent years.

It was smiles and lots of great conversation as everyone shared interesting stories and good wishes. It was easy to see the high regard in which both these men are held.

Lucarelli said, “It has been my honor to know and serve alongside both of these great men. They have taught me so much. Both men are the highest examples of what it means to be a mayor.

“Both John and Don have been tirelessly committed to making everyday life in their towns more enjoyable and affordable, and each have worked hard to ensure a future that is as bright as can be,” Lucarelli added. “Each is an inspiration, and while I will miss working with them, I know our friendship will continue for many, many years.

Lucarelli also thanked the mayors’ wives, Lolly Ekdahl and Mary Lea Burden, “who have given up so much of their family time to allow their husbands to serve.” He also thanked his own wife, Francoise, “for her generosity in allowing me to serve. They are all exceptional women.”
